Retired Teachers – An Untapped Resource
In this job I am lucky to get to speak to hundreds of school contacts on a weekly basis. Understanding how each school manages their own need for cover is always one of the first things I aim to find out. Very often the first response I get is that they use some of their own ex teachers who come back to help them out. This is a perfect solution for both sides for a number of reasons. Here are some of the things they say.
- “We know them and they know us”
- “They know our children”
- “They are familiar with our school and our routines”
- “We know what we are going to get”
- “Continuity is important for our children so using a teacher who they know is the best solution”
When you think about this should be the first choice for every school.
Sometimes those retired teachers would like to pick up a few more days than their old schools can offer each month. This is when the Consultant / School Contact relationship can kick in. The contact is much more likely to recommend a good agency/consultant who they trust over one who is perhaps not quite so conscientious.
In my opinion Retired Teachers are one of the biggest, most obvious of resources for the supply teacher industry yet they remain largely untapped.
